A Step Change Technology
I have always searched adventures on and in the ocean, it fascinates me as it is like another world on our beautiful planet. The ocean covers 70% of the earth surface and still, it is probably one of the least explored parts of our world. When I was, in 2006, introduced to the kite concept by Saab, everything in me said, go for it!
The idea was a flying kite under the water to produce renewable energy. The inventor, Magnus Landberg, had made a great work to compare the product with other generation system. The business case looked good and the technology certainly seemed to have several advantages compared to other technologies.
In 2007 I had the great opportunity to start Minesto together with Saab Group, Chalmers Technical University and Magnus Landberg. We had a flying start, winning awards and investors confirming their interest after just a few months. In august 2007 we were accepted into the Marine Energy Accelerator by the Carbon Trust for offering a step change in cost.
Five years later, I can conclude that the early success was a great start but the future looks even brighter now. However, being a fast follower with a radically new way of producing electricity certainly includes some challenges. But our challenges are also our best opportunities.
Our technology is small, lightweight and extremely efficient as we accelerate the water velocity by up to a factor of 10. This has a very positive input on installation, service and capital costs thereby providing the end customer with low cost renewable energy. As we are able to operate in low flows, we increase the potential tidal energy market with as much as 80% in regions located all over the world.
Being the CEO at Minesto, knowing that we have a step change technology that can change the world, gives great pleasure. Knowing that we have a great team pushing to reach every milestone with a great spirit puts me in the position where I know that we will succeed. The question is when and the answer is soon.
